The old house and the sea is a vacation house in Istria, Croatia. Renovating this old stone beauty by the Adriatic sea is a labour of love, a midlife crisis, and thanks to an abundance of crazy and wonderful, possibly a future book. The house is located in Štinjan, a quiet village close to Pula.
As love alone doesn't pay the bills we now rent out to people we like and the people that they like. We love talking about Istira and the old house by the sea, so please contact us if you want to know more!
The house is located in the small village of Štinjan just outside Pula on the northern Croatian coast. The old stone house had been abandoned for decades when we found it, but has now been renovated to maintain its old rustic mediterranean character while providing what a modern vacation home requires. The house has a beautiful sea view from the upstairs and back yard and you can enjoy incredible sunsets every evening.
We have designed our home to be a simple and calm place to rest up and recharge. The ground floor contains an open kitchen featuring the beautiful old stone staircase and windows in two directions. The kitchen includes a washing machine. Also on the ground floor is a living room with a sofa bed for 2. Upstairs we have two spacious bedrooms with windows in two directions, generous ceiling height and sea view. The largest bedroom is perfect for a family as it has one king sized bed and two single beds. Also works well for groups of teenage friends! The second bedroom has one King sized bed. There is one bathroom in the house with a shower.
Istria is the heart shaped peninsula at the very top of the Adriatic including parts of Croatia, Italy, and Slovenia. The largest part of Istria is in Croatia. However this region is a mix of cultures and languages. The official languages of the Croatian part of Istria are Croatian and Italian and the towns and landscape are full of traces of the area's Roman, Byzentine, and Venetian past.
The rugged coastline with its crystal clear turquoise waters and many coves for swimming is often referred to as Blue Istria. The inland with its rolling hills, vineyards, romantic villages, and truffel rich forests are often called Green Istria. Istria is small enough that you can reach it all within a two a hour drive at the most.
Istria is known for its amazing food (ah the food!), crisp Malvazia wine, olive oil, and crystal clear sea.
